In its latest push to build a privacy-centric ecosystem, Proton has launched Proton Authenticator, a new app designed to provide secure two-factor authentication (2FA) across all major platforms. The app is now available for free on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux, emphasizing Proton’s commitment to universal accessibility and user control.

Built with Proton’s trademark end-to-end encryption, the app allows users to generate and sync time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) securely across devices. It also supports offline functionality, automatic backups, and seamless import of existing 2FA accounts from other apps — all while keeping user data entirely private.
“Two-factor authentication is essential for everyone – not just those who care about their privacy,” said Eamonn Maguire, Head of Account Security at Proton. “We believe strong security should never come at the cost of convenience.”
Privacy Without Compromise
Unlike mainstream options from Google or Microsoft, Proton Authenticator operates independently, ensuring no data harvesting, cloud syncing vulnerabilities, or vendor lock-in. Proton has made the app fully open source, enabling transparency and community trust — crucial differentiators in the privacy tech space.
Key Features:
- End-to-end encrypted syncing of 2FA codes across devices
- Open source and fully auditable
- Works offline without internet
- No user data stored or sold
- Easy import from other 2FA apps like Google Authenticator
- Available on all major OS platforms
This launch comes on the heels of Proton’s AI chatbot, Lumo, released earlier this week. Lumo is a privacy-respecting alternative in the generative AI space, storing no chat history and avoiding user data for model training.
Why It Matters for Tech and VC Audiences
With privacy becoming both a legal and consumer expectation, Proton’s continued expansion beyond secure email and VPN services signals a broader vision: a full-stack, privacy-first productivity ecosystem. For investors and industry watchers, this represents a rare instance of a mission-driven company combining open-source ideals with product velocity.
As cyber threats grow in complexity and scale, tools like Proton Authenticator not only offer practical defense but also shift the market toward user-empowered security — a theme increasingly relevant to both enterprise and consumer sectors.
